Where does one start? Scotland is lowlands and highlands and islands, a land of rugged rustic beauty and the intellectually-renowned colleges of Edinburgh. If it’s monsters you like, you can look for Nessie in the Loch Ness; if you prefer more down-to-earth pursuits, Scottish men and women are friendly, hospitable, and kind. Scottish cuisine is unique, to say the least, but much better than the descriptions of things like haggis (sheep’s stomach filled with a meat and oatmeal mixture and boiled) would lead you to think! Bagpipes and kilts, Highland games and Scottish single-malt whiskey (the name comes from the Gaelic uisge-beatha, meaning “water of life”) are only part of the culture you can experience in Scotland.

The large cities in Scotland have marvelous art and culture museums, and there are dozens of excellent historical museums and sites. In Edinburgh Castle, don’t miss the famous Stone of Scone, over which all the Scottish kings were crowned, or the ancient Scottish crown jewels. And in the countryside, some of the historic castles are available as lodging; speak to your travel agent for information.

Cornwall

Cornwall is the historic birthplace of King Arthur, and it’s easy to believe in Arthurian legends when you stand on its high cliffs. It’s mostly rural now, but has a unique culture and a strong seafaring tradition. Many British emigrants to the Americas set sail from its port Falmouth.

England

Northern England is the home of the famous Lake District of Cumbria, from where the English Romantic poets Byron, Wordsworth, and Shelley often drew their inspiration. Much of Northern England is historically heavily industrialized, but you shouldn’t let that deter you from visiting; the countrysite is beautiful, and the coast nearby. You’ll also find dozens of sites in the countryside where standing stones were erected in the past, as well as museums filled with archaeological treasures from Britain’s past.

When you move southward, you can find the remnants of Sherwood Forest, only a pale shadow of the immense old-growth forest of Robin Hood tales. You’ll also find dozens of castles and castle remains from a millennium of history, ranging from the concentric rings of earthwork foundations left over from the wooden fortresses of Saxons, to the relatively new castles of the Normans. Many castles are still lived in, and there are castles in England you can spend the night in, others that you can tour during the day.

Southward still is Salisbury Plain, the austere green meadowland on which stands Stonehenge. Visitors are not allowed to get close enough to touch the ancient standing stones, but you can still feel the history that permeates the countryside around them.

And on the south coast of England, Bath has an amazing variety of architectural treasures, ranging from the still-usable Roman baths to the proud Georgian townhouses that line its streets. Bath has more protected historical buildings per capita than any city in England. If you visit, you should not miss the Roman baths; the Pump Room, center of Georgian society; and the Royal Crescent, lined with elegant Georgian homes from the 19th century heyday of Bath. And from Bath, you can take the 2 ½ hour bus trip to London, surely the crowning glory of any tour of England.

London

London is one of the premier cities of the world, populated by more than seven million people. And it is filled with history, with art, with culture. It is not to be missed, no matter what your interests. If you like nightlife, London has some of the best nightclubs in the world, ranging from tough punk bars to celebrity-haunted clubs. In the day, you can get free admission to the British Museum, the British Library, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and Tate Gallery; admission to many, many other cultural attractions is inexpensive.

There are dozens of walking tours of London, both self-guided and using a guide; if you look online, you can find many of the self-guided ones for free. Almost every guidebook to London also has its own self-guided tours listed.

We asked our guest to give us their opinions on the benefits of apartment rentals as well as any of the downsides. Here is a compilation of interesting points made by our clients which we believe can help you weigh your options when choosing which type of accommodation is most likely to suit your style when traveling to London for a holiday.

There is a belief that visitors to London who opt for a hotel stay will often see much of their holiday budget being spent on accommodations alone. Our guests found this to be rather true. For the same rates as a typical hotel, an apartment rental provided them with more value for their money and more choices regarding sizes and style. Cleaner and quieter, rentals have the added benefit of a kitchen. Our guests found that they could save money by dining at home rather than in restaurants every day. Even London studio, the smallest sized vacation rentals, is often larger and better equipped than a simple single standard London hotel room.

Hotels may provide breakfast and, if you are lucky, a little kettle in each room. Our clients state that this simply does not match up to the pleasure of doing your morning food shopping in the markets of London and meeting back “home” with friends and loved ones for a convivial meal.

Tips from our guests: If you are on a budget but want to avoid the terrible one/two star hotels of London, consider a vacation rental outside of the first zone of London. By renting in the Battersea, you are next to Chelsea and Knightsbridge is a short distance too.

An apartment like Eternity may be a perfect choice at a very affordable rate. Hoxton Square is also kissing the border of Shoreditch – a hip and happening place in central London. Opting for a 2 bedroom like Firefly can be an excellent way to save money, while being steps from Bloomsbury.

An area like Tower Bridge will put you close enough to enjoy Tower Hill and Saint-Paul’s Cathedral. Consider a property located near a beautiful market called Othello or Hamlet, a one bedroom – 1-bathroom accommodation practically on the Thames river banks.

When choosing a London vacation rental you will have access to amenities that would be impossible to obtain in any place other than a 5 star London palace. A two bedroom apartment in Earls Court with its own garden such as Twelfth Night or a gem like Duchess, a Tower bridge penthouse with a terrasse overlooking London’s skyline are real treasures and will make a London vacation unforgettable.

It is no secret that fans of short-term rentals are travelers with a taste for things private, charming and personal. If you like to do things your own way, at your own pace without rigid hotel rules, curfews, impersonal service then a vacation rental is for you. Not your first time in London? Whether you are traveling with adults only, children or are just a group of friends looking to spend a fun time abroad, our agency caters for large and small groups. We asked families what made them opt for a vacation rental rather than a hotel suite.

They do not have an official star rating, and we have only allotted three stars to them, as they do not have a restaurant. However, the apartments and the facilities are more like four-star in terms of quality. What’s more, they are in a low-rise hotel, not a massive tower block – you can walk to great boutiques, cafes and shops, and this neighbourhood has a real summer holiday feel to it.

Plus, the apartments are lovely, and the staff are extremely nice. Apartments are either one or two bedrooms, very contemporary, extremely comfortable and very well equipped. All have very modern kitchens with oven, hob, microwave, fridge, cutlery, crockery and everything else you would need for a self-catering holiday, as well as a washing machine and dryer. If you don’t want to cook, you can order room service or staff will advise you of local restaurants offering very good delivery services. Apartments are decorated in soothing earth tones, and bedrooms have either a king bed or twins, and a flat-panel TV.

Living rooms have funky brown sofas, abstract-design rugs, low glass coffee tables, cable TV and a DVD player. Towels and sheets are changed and the apartment cleaned daily. A glass dining table has seating for either four or six people depending on the apartment size. A pleasant rooftop pool and a small gym are other amenities.
